New Sports Academies for Indigenous Students

13 March 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced that new school-based sports academies for Indigenous students will aim to engage, motivate and lead them into lifelong learning.

“Thirteen innovative academies drawing students from secondary schools, including remote areas, will begin operating in five States and Territories over the next few months,” Minister Bishop said.

“Working within schools, the academies will provide male and female students with a wide range of courses through a variety of sports. Studies will focus on healthy lifestyles, leadership, career planning and sports including football, netball and basketball.

“The emphasis is on using sport to motivate students to achieve at school, thus opening the door to future opportunity.

“About 1600 Indigenous secondary school students will participate in 2007 and 2008 and we expect this number to increase steadily in the future.

“The academies are a key element of the Australian Government’s four-year $19.6 million Sporting Chance Programme, announced in May 2006," Minister Bishop said.

The Programme will deliver 20 academies to 2009. Round Two, later in 2007, will fund another seven academies.

In addition the education engagement strategies element of the Sporting Chance Programme was also announced by the Minister today.

This element of the Programme will be delivered from 2007 and provide sport and recreation based strategies for Indigenous primary and secondary students that support improved educational engagement.
