Hartsuyker welcomes extra marine science places at Coffs Harbour Centre

Coffs Harbour’s National Marine Science Centre is expected to benefit from additional university places to be announced tomorrow by the Federal Minister for Education, Science and Training, Dr Brendan Nelson.

Dr Nelson told a gathering of education and community representatives in Coffs Harbour last night that 20 additional places would be allocated for marine science courses next year.

The Federal Member for Cowper, Luke Hartsuyker’s said the extra places will increase the level of activity at the Centre and strengthen the facility’s presence in the field of marine science.

“The National Marine Science Centre operates under the guidance of both Southern Cross University and the University of New England,” Mr Hartsuyker said.

“The Centre has been working towards commercialising some operations and building on the strong academic work now in place.

“This announcement of an additional 20 places and the expectation that more than 50 marine science places will come on line in the next four years will add tremendous value to the Centre’s operation.”

Mr Hartsuyker said he was also looking towards extra university places being awarded to the Southern Cross University in the fields of education and nursing.

Dr Nelson is expected to release the full round of university places for 2005 tomorrow (Friday).
