I wish to pay tribute to Hamilton’s only Victoria Cross recipient, Mr Ted Kenna, who sadly passed away last night just two days after his 90th birthday.

Ted was a remarkable Australian. He was always unassuming, but clearly had that deep sense of commitment to his fellow countrymen, as evidenced in his being awarded the highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross.

Ted was a much valued member of the Hamilton community, where he lived for most of his life, and he continued to make a contribution in his later years through his strong commitment to veterans and his willingness to visit schools and share his experiences with students.

Ted was recognised locally in 1988 when I was able to arrange for the renowned Australian artist Sir William Dargie, 8 times winner of the Archibald Prize, to paint his portrait. A local appeal was launched and the people of Hamilton gave generously to raise funds for the portrait, which now hangs in the Ted Kenna Room at the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre.

Ted will be greatly missed locally and in the wider veteran community. My thoughts are with Marj and the rest of Ted’s family.
