ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE RIGHT REVEREND DR PETER HOLLINGWORTH, AC, OBE,

GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA

ON THE OCCASION OF

THE YEPERENYE FEDERATION FESTIVAL

ALICE SPRINGS

8 SEPTEMBER 2001

I thank the Arrernte elders for their invitation to all Australians, issued in the form of these boomerangs in Sydney on the first day of the Centenary of Federation year.

This evening, your boomerangs return.

And with them come Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians from across the country, who gather with you at the foot of the MacDonnell Ranges on the land of the Yeperenye Dreaming story.

This evening, the town's children - black and white - will perform that story.

And together, we will recognise the first Federation of nations who would sometimes come together in the centre of this vast continent.

We will acknowledge the hurt of the past. And of the present.

We will celebrate the contribution of Indigenous peoples to the modern Australian nation over 100 years, to its history and culture, its protection during two world wars, its growth and prosperity and identity.

And we'll take heart from all the young people who are here for this historic event that Australia's second century as a nation will see us walking together along The Road Ahead.
