De-Anne Kelly, MP Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence 33/2005 Tuesday, 20 December 2005 MARKETING GURU JOINS DEFENCE FORCE RECRUITING The Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, De-Anne Kelly, has welcomed the appointment of former FOXTEL marketing manager Richard Howarth to the Defence Force Recruiting (DFR) group. Mrs Kelly said Mr Howarth had taken up the position of national marketing manager with DFR and joined an excellent team headed by Brigadier Simon Gould. She said Brigadier Gould was proving to be very capable, having already developed a comprehensive strategic plan, and she was looking forward to working with all DFR members on a range of ideas to help boost recruitment numbers. “Defence recognises that if it is to be an employer of choice in today’s competitive employment market, it must continually look at innovative ways to attract people,” Mrs Kelly said. “Recruiting and retention is my number one priority and I have put into action a Ministerial Directed Review to consider ways to boost our numbers and hold on to our experienced Defence Force members.” Mrs Kelly said Mr Howarth had an extensive background in marketing and media, having worked as general manager, marketing with FOXTEL, being responsible for all acquisition and subscriber-based marketing, including budget planning and presentations. She said Mr Howarth joined FOXTEL from Austereo, where he was group marketing manager, and had worked with Coca-Cola Amatil as communications manager and national advertising manager. He also has experience in the advertising industry, working for DDB Australia as group account director, with clients including News Ltd, McDonald’s Restaurants and Dairy Farmers; and with BADJAR on the Tattersall’s account. Mr Howarth’s career began with Ford Australia on its graduate program. He holds an MBA (UTS), Bachelor of Business - Marketing (Monash), Bachelor of Arts (Monash) and has completed the Future Leaders Program with Boston Consulting Group.
