Press Release Ref: 602 Published: 5/3/2002 Title: Federal Government Grants $700,000 to Merimbula State School

Students and staff at Merimbula Public School will benefit from a Commonwealth Government grant of $700,000 for a new building project, the Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, announced today.

Mr Nairn said that the grant would be used for an upgrade of student facilities at the school.

Both the Federal and the State Government will jointly fund this major upgrade of the school’s facilities. The total cost is projected to be $4.5 million.

"The new facilities will help the school to provide the best possible learning environment for students in the area," Mr Nairn said.

"The Commonwealth Government spends more than $5.6 billion a year on funding for government and non•government schools.

In 2002 around $227 million has been allocated to capital projects in government schools.

"The Commonwealth Capital Grants Programme for Schools is designed to improve the educational outcomes of educationally disadvantaged students.

"This project involves a significant amount of funding • an indication of the importance the Government places on developing and maintaining school infrastructure", he said.

"Over the period 2001•2004 the Commonwealth Government will provide around $25.2 billion in direct funding to schools. This demonstrates the Government’s commitment to a strong and

effective school system, maximising the opportunities for young Australians,” Mr Nairn said.
