Labor rips off Eastern Suburbs again

Friday, June 10, 2005

Malcolm Turnbull, Federal Member for Wentworth, described the Carr Government's neglect of public

education in the Eastern Suburbs as "scandalous".

“There is only one Public High School in the electorate of Wentworth - Rose Bay Secondary College.

The Carr Labor State Government has now announced that it will not spend the money to renovate

the old premises at the Dover Heights campus. This is a breach of promise to the parents and

children of Rose Bay Secondary College,” Mr Turnbull said.

“On 19 May I wrote to Carmel Tebbutt MLC, the State Minister for Education and Training, expressing

my very grave concern at the State Government’s failure to fund immediately the Stage 2 Building

Programme of the Rose Bay Secondary College. The only response I have received is an

acknowledgment letter on 7 June from her Assistant Private Secretary stating that the matters I

raised have been noted and are receiving attention.”

“The parents were promised a new school: with buildings either newly constructed or renovated. The

State Government wanted to close the Vaucluse High School campus so that it can sell that very

valuable piece of land for development. But now, typically, it is going to pocket the proceeds of

selling the Vaucluse High School land and at the same time renege on its promise to renovate the

Dover Heights school buildings.”

“The Labor Party complains bitterly about parents choosing non-government schools, especially in the

Eastern Suburbs. Yet when there was an opportunity to ensure our area had a State High School with

first class facilities, the Labor Government decided to take the money and run away with it.”

“The Eastern Suburbs contribute more state taxes than any other community in Sydney. Our high

property values ensure we pay the most in stamp duty and land tax. Yet it is this community which

contributes the most that is being short-changed yet again, by the Labor Party,” Mr Turnbull

concluded.
