NEWS RELEASE

THE HON MICHAEL LEE MP

MEMBER FOR DOBELL

SHADOW MINISTER FOR EDUCATION

Kemp: Scrooge not Santa

“Dr Kemp is Scrooge not Santa when it comes to university funding,” according to Shadow Education Minister, Michael Lee.

“With the release of university statistics today, Dr Kemp is trying to paint himself as Santa.

“He is desperately hoping that his magical tricks with figures will make people forget that the Howard Government has cut $840 million from higher education, a loss of 21,000 places according to his own Department.

“That is why today’s report shows that the number of Australian students commencing in 1998 was DOWN by 1.5% (or 3,470 students).

“It is also extremely worrying that the number of commencing postgraduates in 1998 was DOWN by 2.6% (or 1,834 students),” said Mr Lee.

“How are we ever going to be the clever country when Dr Kemp’s cuts and HECS hikes are driving thousands of students away from university?”
