TROOP NUMBERS TO BE BOOSTED Thursday, 24 August 2006

The Federal Government has today announced that the size of the Australian Defence Force will be increased. “Two additional light infantry battalions will be introduced in two stages, with the first battalion to be established by the end of 2008,” Member for Herbert, Peter Lindsay, said today. Once the first new battalion is in place, the establishment date of the second battalion will be made. An eight battalion structure would result in 2,600 additional soldiers being recruited. “With these additional light infantry battalions the Army will be better able to sustain operations once deployed and to rotate forces,” Mr Lindsay said. “Defence capabilities will also be enhanced to support these additional soldiers, such as strategic communications, ground mobility, maritime and airlift operations, health care and other key enablers,” he said. The move to increase the ADF’s capacity will be supported by further recruiting and retention initiatives.
