Press Release Ref: 842 Published: 7/11/2002 Title: Unemployment remains steady

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn said today the latest national unemployment figures show the Howard Government’s economic policy is reaping benefits for Australia.

The national jobless rate fell from 6.2 to 6.0 per cent in October, seasonally adjusted.

“This is equal to the lowest level since March 1990 with 9,363,100 people in employment across the country,” Mr Nairn said.

“The participation rate remained largely unchanged at 63.4 per cent for the month.

“The number of people receiving either Newstart or the Youth Allowance from Centrelink in Eden-Monaro increased slightly by a total of 22 with a fall of 2.1 per cent in Batemans Bay, Bega remained the same, Cooma rose by 6.1 per cent, Narooma down by 2.6 per cent and Queanbeyan up 4.2 per cent.

“This follows significant falls in the number of people receiving the payments across Eden-Monaro in August and September, 147 and 55 respectively.

“Clearly international uncertainty and the drought remain as downside risks to economic growth and consequently employment growth.

“However today’s figures in combination with the strong growth in the various job vacancy series and other leading indicators, point to a continuation of solid employment prospects through the first half of 2003,” he said.

Ends…Thursday, 7 November 2002.
