Press Release Ref: 573 Published: 4/2/2002 Title: Nairn Welcomes Gaol Reopening

Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, Gary Nairn, today welcomed the imminent reopening of the Cooma Gaol.

“The news of the closure of the gaol in July 1998 was a devastating blow to a community that had come to rely on the income generated through the facility.

“The Cooma of July 1998 is very different to the Cooma of today. Year-round tourism is growing from season to season, and I note over the last year, Government figures indicate a drop of unemployment from 4.8% to 3.8%.

“There have been facilities that have assisted the growth of Cooma and the reduction in unemployment, which include the establishment of both the Cooma Call and Technology Centre and Defence Service Centre. The Federal Government, incidentally, provided $1.8 million and $30 million respectively for these projects.

“The reopening of the gaol will create approximately sixty more jobs. This is even more good news for the community, and should provide further stimulation to the local economy.

“The State Member for Monaro, Peter Webb, has supported the Federal Government’s actions over the last few years and he has always had my support for State initiatives in Cooma, such as the reopening of the gaol. I look forward to visiting the new gaol over the next few weeks,”

concluded Mr Nairn.
