SHADOW MINISTER FOR EDUCATION

Tasmanian Liberals Oppose VSU

The Tasmanian Parliament today unanimously supported a motion condemning Dr Kemp’s voluntary student unionism (VSU) legislation in the following terms:

‘That t his House expresses its concern at the Federal Liberal Government’s attempts to outlaw compulsory student services and amenities Fees end notes the detrimental effect that such a move would have on the ability of student unions to provide a wide range of essential services.’

I congratulate the liberal Members of the Tasmanian Legislative Assembly for standing up for the welfare of students and the quality of university education.

The unanimous passage of the motion places considerable pressure on all Tasmanian Senators to oppose Dr Kemp’s vindictive and destructive legislation when It reaches the Senate.

Day by day the list of people queuing up to condemn Dr Kemp is growing.

The members of the Tasmanian legislative assembly can now be added to

the list which includes:

* Sir Gerard Brennan, former Chief Justice of the High Court;

* Steve Moneghetti, Australian Olympian and marathon runner,

* The Australian Vice-Chancellors Committee; and

* Four Federal Coalltion backbenchers Bob Katter. Kay Hull, Ian Macfa rlane and Joanna Gash.

The growing dissent within Coalition party ranks explains Dr Kemp’s refusal in question time yesterday to accept my challenge that he resign if his legislation is watered down or abandoned by his own party.
