PAKISTAN NUCLEAR TEST

The Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurie Brereton, has strongly condemned Pakistan’s sixth nuclear test.

“Pakistan’s latest test is another act of absolute nuclear madness carried out in total defiance of international opinion”, Mr Brereton said.

“The strongest possible condemnation of both India and Pakistan and concerted action by the world community is vital to ensure this vicious nuclear spiral goes no further.”

“Both India and Pakistan must be subjected to real pressure to declare an immediate moratorium on all nuclear weapon and ballistic missile tests, and to move without delay to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.”

“In addition to the significant but essentially symbolic measures already applied to India and Pakistan, Australia should support the United States’ efforts to freeze multilateral loans to both countries by the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank”

“In the absence of substantive measures to relieve tension and unambiguous commitments to join the overwhelming majority of the world community in renouncing nuclear testing, India and Pakistan should be treated as exactly what they are — nuclear pariahs.”
