MAY - NO TO MERGER without consultation

Any merger between the Liberal Party and Nationals must be supported by grassroots members or it will fracture the party rather than aid with rebuilding, Federal Member for McPherson, and Shadow Minister for Ageing Margaret May MP said today.

“We must replenish our party membership and show existing members we will not disregard their views. The membership is the backbone of our party, Mrs May said.

“Branch members in McPherson are already upset at the lack of consultation over running a Liberal Party ticket in the Gold Coast City Council elections.

“Everyday I am hearing from local branch members who are disillusioned with the lack of consultation from the State Executive. Now is not the time to push forward blindly with merger talks on a state level to form one conservative party. Now is the time to consult with members.

Mrs May said, I encourage all members of the Liberal Party to make their elected representatives aware of their views on any merger with the Nationals.

“I am personally surveying all my members in McPherson and will make the result of the survey available to the State Executive.

“Most importantly I urge the State Executive to listen to the views of branch members before pushing ahead with any plans to merge”, Mrs May said.

“It is my personal view that any merger should be driven from a federal level under a Liberal banner. But I am only one view - any merger proposal must have the full support of the grassroots of the party.
