Press Release Ref: 570 Published: 1/2/2002 Title: $36,000 to Improve Community Transport in Bombala

The Bombala Shire Council will receive a $36,000 grant from the Federal Government to purchase a wheelchair accessible community bus, the Member for Eden•Monaro, Gary Nairn, announced today.

Mr Nairn said the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Danna Vale, approved funding through Veteran & Community Grants, administered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

"Veteran & Community Grants help develop projects that provide practical support to veterans and ex•service communities across Australia," Mr Nairn said.

"Projects funded are wide ranging and include providing capital funding for residential care facilities, promoting health issues, encouraging healthier lifestyles, fostering social and personal support services and improving access to community care services."

Funding is available to ex•service organisations and other groups best placed to meet identified veteran community needs such as residential and community care issues.

Mr Nairn said Bombala Shire Council would use its grant to purchase a wheelchair accessible community bus which would help residents of the smaller townships in the shire to access to community services.

"This grant demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to meeting the needs of the people of the Eden•Monaro electorate," he said.

Veteran & Community Grants will assist projects across Australia with more than $8 million

funding during 2001/2002.
