28 February 2006 HAWKER WELCOMES NEW WORK FOR THE DOLE PROJECTS

Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today announced that seven new Work for the Dole projects are now underway across Western Victoria.

Mr Hawker said that these new projects are providing opportunities and skills to over thirty local jobseekers.

“Both job seekers and their local communities benefit from Work for the Dole projects,” he said.

“Participants in Work for the Dole activities are improving their prospects of finding a job and they are re-building their self esteem and work skills. It’s a Mutual Obligation initiative which gives job seekers the opportunity to actively participate in maintaining contact with the world of work.”

The new projects involve participants working at the Salvation Army in Warrnambool, Community groups in Port Fairy, Camperdown, Port Fairy, Terang, Ararat and Stawell and building and landscaping projects in Hamilton, Heywood, Portland and Casterton.

Participants in Avoca will assist local schools in the areas of administration, teacher aide and general maintenance.

“Since Work for the Dole was set up in 1997, 26,380 projects have been approved across Australia, providing 387,247 places for unemployed people,” Mr Hawker said.

“The bottom line is Work for the Dole is working. It is part of the Government’s integrated approach to tackling long-term unemployment and as such, its success is reflected in the record low levels of unemployment and the significant falls in long term unemployment.

"I especially congratulate the local Community Work Coordinators and project sponsors who have successfully proposed these very worthwhile projects in Western Victoria. They are doing a great job in bringing benefits to both local unemployed people and to our local communities,” he said.
