KELVIN THOMSON Media Release from the Shadow Minister for Sustainability, the Environment and Heritage Tuesday, May 25, 2004 TIME FOR POINT NEPEAN TRUST HEAD TO GO The Liberal Government appointed Head of the Point Nepean Community Trust, Simon McKeon, has been quoted in the Mornington and Southern Peninsula Mail (20/5/04) as saying: “..the most significant decision will be whether to transfer the land to the State” and “There could be any number of reasons why it would not be transferred….” This flies in the face of the Liberal Government’s announcement, after much public pressure, that the land at Point Nepean would be handed over to the Victorian Government to be administered as National Park. Either Mr McKeon doesn’t understand what the Government meant when it bowed to community pressure or he is flagrantly ignoring Government decisions and going it alone. On such a sensitive issue, neither explanation is acceptable. Last year, the Howard Government was forced to abandon plans to hand over the Point Nepean site for development by a consortium led by a Queensland property developer after a strong community campaign against the move and a barrage of criticism from the Federal Opposition. Now we have Mr McKeon coming out saying that the land might still not be handed over and, worse still, that the Point Nepean Community Trust, led by Mr McKeon, will be deciding the issue. If the Liberal Government does not now act to replace Mr McKeon, Mornington Peninsula residents will be entitled to believe that the announcement that Point Nepean would be handed over to become National Park was simply a political trick.
