Government plastic bag failure

28th Jul 04

The claimed 29% drop in plastic bag usage from four big grocery chains is a failure, Greens Senator Bob Brown said today.

"Had the government backed the Greens' legislation for a 25 cents levy on plastic bags there would be 93% fewer plastic bags - that is the experience in Ireland," Senator Brown said.

"So, in effect, some four billion plastic bags will go into the environment this year and next year which would not have circulated if the Greens' legislation had been endorsed by the Howard government.

"The figures released today say nothing about the hundreds of other retail outlets or the much greater plastic bag savings by chain stores which have imposed a levy."
