Science and Innovation in the 2006-07 Budget

9 May 2006 BUD 21/06

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced the Australian Government will commit a record $5.97 billion for science and innovation in 2006-07 as part of this year’s Budget.

This includes significant investment in the sector from the 10-year, $8.3 billion commitment the Government made through the Backing Australia’s Ability and Backing Australia’s Ability - Building Our Future Through Science and Innovation packages.

"Funding from the Backing Australia’s Ability packages has increased progressively as programmes have been implemented," Minister Bishop said.

This Budget also announces a further investment of $265 million in 2005-06, comprising $50 million for the John Curtin School of Medical Research and $215 million for medical research infrastructure projects.

"These commitments are additional to the support announced in last year’s Budget, which had already taken Australian Government support for science and innovation to record levels", Minister Bishop said.

"The funding for science and innovation announced in this Budget continues the Australian Government’s strong support for this vital area, which is critical to Australia’s prosperity.

"The Government has a strong focus on encouraging the growth of innovative Australian companies that produce internationally competitive goods and services, increase productivity and create jobs."

"This Budget provides an increase of $139.8 million to the business enterprise sector."
