NEWCASTLE - A LITMUS TEST FOR THE NATION

When BHP closed its steelworks last months, the eye s and the ears of the nation were on Newcastle.

This Thursday, 21 October, Newcastle will take its story of confidence and opportunity to the nation with a Newcastle Goes National function at Parliament House Canberra.

The newly elected Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Cr John Tate will speak for the Newcastle and Hunter Region with the Prime Minister, John Howard and Opposition

Leader Kim Beazley responding.

In a display of political cooperation, Newcastle MP Allan Morris and Liberal Senator John Tierney worked together to promote Newcastle to the nation’s decision-makers.

Cr Tate said that the message Newcastle will take to Canberra is a mixture of confidence in the future, but a growing concern about the region’s unemployment rate.

“Our economy is often seen by national commentators as a litmus test for Australia —particularly the health of manufacturing and exports. There is a feeling that if things are going well for us, then Australia will be okay,” he said.

Mr Morris said that as Australia’s major regional centre, Newcastle has taken the lead in regional policy development and diversification.

“It is now important that national decision-makers understand the strengths of the region, particularly our capacity to work as a team to reinvent our community.

Senator Tierney said he was hopeful that the delegation of 20 Newcastle/Hunter regional leaders in Canberra for the day could meet with a number of Federal Ministers.
