Senator the Hon Richard Alston

Minister for Communications, the Information Economy and the Arts

Senator the Hon Robert Hill

Minister for the Environment

The Minister for the Environment , Senator Robert Hill, and the Minister for Communications, the Information Economy and the Arts, Senator Richard Alston, today released the complete list of successful projects in the $70.4 million Federation Cultural and Heritage Projects program.

The Ministers said that the Commonwealth was delighted with the strong level of support shown for the program, with more than 740 applications seeking more than $1.5 billion in funding. Sixty proposals were successful in their bid for funding.

The successful projects provide a balance between cultural and heritage projects, with many being a combination, providing new or upgraded cultural facilities in heritage buildings. There is also a balance between projects in metropolitan and regional Australia, where so much of Australia’s heritage exists.

Successful projects include:

* $4.78m for the conservation/restoration of nine National Trust properties in New South Wales;

* $630,000 for the National Wool Museum in Geelong, Victoria;

* $936,000 for the Townsville Maritime Museum, Queensland;

* $2.0m for the redevelopment of Fairbridge Village in Western Australia;

* $300,000 for the Mawson Collection in South Australia;

* $1.0m towards the conservation of Clarendon Homestead in Tasmania;

* $675,000 for the development of Tuggeranong Homestead, ACT; and

* $2.3m for an additional gallery at the Araluen Centre in Alice Springs, NT.

‘The successful projects all meet the criteria for the program and, in particular, will contribute to the celebration of the centenary of Australia’s Federation in the lead up to and during 2001, and into the future,’ Senator Alston said.
