‘This is a cruel attack

on children’ - Minister

The Hon Judi Moylan, MP, Minister for the Status of Women, said today that Pauline Hanson’s comments about ending assistance to single mo thers after a first child was “a cruel attack on children”.

The Minister said it was clear that Pauline Hanson had no idea of the facts about lone parents, who comprised the poorest families in Australia and who were in a minority of welfare claimants.

“Most  single mothers - and let us remember that only 10,265 single mothers out of 342.290 are under 20- try hard to get back on their feet. Most remain on welfare only for a limited period of around two years.

“One would have thought that on this occasion Ms Hanson would have got it right, because she herself is in the largest group of single mothers aged over 30.

“She has been there and done that and in her heart of hearts she must know that what she is saying is exaggerated.

“She is exploiting community fears for her own political ends.

“As a sole parent she must know she is shaming a lot of decent Australians who struggle to rear their children alone.

“It is quite wrong to suggest that there are big savings by ripping payments of single parents. That is simply not true.

“This is just a cruel attack on small children as well as their mothers,” the Minister said.
