Blair should go to Great Hall: Greens

Senator Brown, 28th February 2006 \

When British Prime Minister Tony Blair visits Canberra next month he should give his address in the Great Hall, not in either chamber of parliament, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

"The practice of having US and Chinese presidents speak to a joint meeting of both houses in the House of Representatives has been rejected by consequent inquiries," Senator Brown said.

"One option is for a House address to which Senators are invited. However the Great Hall is better appointed for great addresses by foreign heads of state.

"Mr Blair is head of government, but not head of state. It is notable that the British head of state, who will be visiting Australia in the same week has been given no invitation to speak by our Prime Minister, John Howard," Senator Brown said.
