10 August 2006 MORE THAN $31 MILLION FOR LOCAL COUNCILS More than $31 million has been allocated for local governments in the Riverina electorate in 2006-07 for local roads and the provision of other services, The Nationals Member for Riverina, Kay Hull, said today. Mrs Hull said the 12 councils in the region will receive the Financial Assistance Grants to assist in providing the high quality services that local communities need and expect. The allocated grants are as follows: • Carrathool Shire Council - $3,232,002 • Coolamon Shire Council - $2,272,310 • Cootamundra Shire Council - $1,847,103 • Griffith City Council - $2,920,682 • Gundagai Shire Council - $1,327,585 • Hay Shire Council - $1,747,922 • Junee Shire Council - $1,949,791 • Leeton Shire Council - $2,562,263 • Murrumbidgee Shire Council - $1,124,232 • Narrandera Shire Council - $2,888,243 • Temora Shire Council - $2,213,825 • Wagga Wagga City Council - $7,303,326 “These councils can allocate the funds according to local priorities because the grants are untied,” Mrs Hull said. “Councils use these grants for a range of health, community, recreational, cultural and environmental services and to provide and maintain infrastructure such as roads.” Mrs Hull said the first quarterly payment is expected on Tuesday August 15, 2006. Nationally, the Federal Government has allocated $1.684 billion in financial assistance grants to local government, with New South Wales councils receiving 32 per cent of the national total. The Federal Government has increased financial assistance grants funding to local government for 2006-07 by 67.4 million over 2005-06 which brings the total increase in funding to local government to around $520 million since 1996.
