NEW SHADOW MINISTER FOR TOURISM

Member for Corio, Gavan O’Connor, today welcomed the addition of tourism to his existing portfolio responsibilities.

The tourism industry generated over $16 billion in export earnings last year and despite the challenges it currently faces tourism remains a major employer and a key component of the national economy with an exciting future.

Mr. O’Connor said that he was looking forward to working with the industry to develop the policy settings to ensure a bright future for the tourism industry in Australia.

Responsibility for tourism meshes well with Mr. O’Connor’s existing portfolio areas of regional services, territories and local government. In his discussions with communities around the nation on economic developed, tourism has featured very highly.

Tourism is an important and growing industry in Mr. O’Connor’s own electorate, which is situated at the gateway of one of Australia’s great tourism icons, the Great Ocean Road.

Mr. O’Connor thanked Leader of the Opposition, Simon Crean, for the opportunity to work with one of Australia’s most exciting industries.
