MEDIA RELEASE The Hon. Peter Reith, MP Minister for Defence

MEDIA RELEASE

WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM DR MARTIN?

The Opposition Spokesman for Defence Stephen Martin claimed in Parliament today that I misrepresented him in relation to a promise he had made that the ALP would keep the HMAS JERVIS BAY Catamaran.

Stephen Martin’s promise is implicit in his media release of Tuesday June 5 titled:

‘NAVY SHOULD HAVE KEPT THE DILI EXPRESS’

Stephen Martin said in Parliament today:

"What I have said in that press release in reference to the decision to discontinue the JERVIS BAY’S service that in fact HMAS JERVIS BAY could have adequately carried out these functions had its lease been extended."

I issued a Media Release at that time advising that HMAS JERVIS BAY was not to have its lease renewed as it was additional capability the Navy did not need with the commencement of service of HMAS MANOORA and HMAS KANIMBLA.

In that release I challenged Kim Beazley to explain how he would pay for a new $80 million dollar replacement catamaran as the ALP was determined Navy should keep the ‘Dili Express’.

It has taken a full two months for the Opposition to rule out purchase of the catamaran and affirm it, in fact, plans a lease.

Stephen Martin must tell the Australian people for how many years Navy will be paying the $22 million per year it will cost to have the JERVIS BAY back in service.

If the ALP plans to lease JERVIS BAY for four years that, of course, amounts to approximately $88 million dollars.

$88 million which isn’t in the White Paper and isn’t in the Budget.

So how does the Opposition plan to pay for it?
