LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION THE HON KIM C BEAZLEY MP

HOWARD STRIPS FUNDING FROM WOMEN'S ADVOCATES WHO WON'T PROMOTE HIS IR LAWS

John Howard has arrogantly tried to turn advocates for women victimised at work into propaganda arms for his extreme IR laws.

The Howard Government has made funding to the Queensland Working Women's Service conditional on it conducting Workchoices seminars and producing publications which promote its extreme industrial relations laws.

This funding is offered instead of the money the service has relied on since 1994 to provide free assistance and representation to women who have been sexually harassed, unfairly or unlawfully dismissed, or discriminated against.

This is an out of touch Howard Government at its arrogant and extreme worst.

John Howard and Kevin Andrews are more interested in spin to protect themselves than in advocacy that protects women from bullying.

The Government is telling women who have just lost their jobs and have mortgages to pay that political propaganda is more important than representation to assist them when they are unfairly dismissed.

The Working Women's Service in Queensland has rightly rejected the Howard Government's funding.

Unlike the Howard Government, the Queensland service understands case work and representation is more important than Workchoices propaganda.

Unfortunately the Tasmanian Centre will have to shut down as a direct result of the Government's arrogant refusal to fund these important services.

John Howard has made Australian women easier to sack and easier to bully and de-funded the services which help them.
