MEDIA RELEASE

STATEMENT BY THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL TO THE COMMUNITIES OF NORTH QUEENSLAND FOLLOWING CYCLONE LARRY

21 MARCH 2006

At this time of great devastation, my wife Marlena joins me and all Australians in expressing our heartfelt sympathy to you all following the terrifying weather events associated with Cyclone Larry.

Many of you will feel isolated and concerned at this time but we hope that you can take comfort in the fact that the nation is behind you and that the Australian community will do whatever it can to support you.

When we visited your region last year Marlena and I enjoyed meeting many of you and learning of your communities, hopes and aspirations. We are saddened to see your beautiful region so damaged, but we know with true Aussie far north Queensland spirit, you will rebuild.

We applaud the efforts of police, fire and other emergency workers in providing initial assistance to those in need and we welcome the activity now underway to resume essential services.

Our thoughts are with you during this difficult and distressing time, and we hope to visit you shortly.
