AFTER HOUR GPs: IMPROVING ACCESS FOR LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN THE SOUTH WEST

Federal Member for Wannon, David Hawker, today announced almost $100,000 in Commonwealth Government funding to improve access to after-hours care from local doctors in the South West.

The Otway Division of General Practice (DGP) will receive the funding to support the establishment of after-hours services in the region.

“I am delighted that the South West is to be one of the first of many Australian communities to receive Commonwealth Government funding to support after-hours GP services,” Mr Hawker said.

“Particularly, this ‘Supplementary Grant’ funding will assist the Otway DGP, which has an established after hours services, to meet their costs and remain financially viable.

“This funding is part of the Round the Clock Medicare initiative - a five year, $106.2 million national plan to help restore after-hours GP care across Australia”.

Under the initiative, local after hours GP services are being funded in three ways:

• Operating Subsidies of up to $200,000 per year for up to three years for new or recently established after-hours GP services. • Start up Grants of up to $200,000 over two years for new after-hours GP services to establish after-hours services or to extend existing GP services into the after-hours period. • Supplementary Grants of up to $50,000 a year for two years. These will assist 50 established after-

hours services.

“Western Victoria has a strong network of GPs as our first line of treatment for illness and injury. This investment will ensure that the region has access to high quality and convenient GP services,” Mr Hawker said.
