Thursday 12 January 2006

Today’s labour force figures confirm that young Australians are being locked out of a prosperous future, Shadow Employment Minister Penny Wong said.

The figures show full-time teenage unemployment stuck at over 20 per cent, at a time when Australia faces a skills crisis and tertiary education places are drying up for young Australians.

It has been revealed today that 5,000 people in Queensland alone will miss out on a TAFE or university place because of the Howard Government’s failure to properly invest in skills.

“One in five teenagers who wants full time work is unemployed, while the nation is in the grip of a skills crisis,” Senator Wong said.

“Young Australians who want to work or improve their job prospects through study are being let down because of the Howard Government’s failure to invest in skills.

“The Howard Government’s incompetence is breathtaking: they turn jobless Australians away from training and education while employers are desperate for skilled workers.”
