$2 million upgrade of visitor facilities at Villawood Detention Centre

VPS 060/2004

I am pleased to announce a $2 million upgrade to the Visitor Processing Facility at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

Several hundred people a day visit the centre and the current processing arrangements can no longer cope.

Visitors currently must queue outside in all weather and only three or four people can be processed at any time.

The upgrade will provide a much larger and enhanced facility and allow longer visiting hours.

Entry to the Centre will be quicker and more efficient with enhanced security screening.

The upgraded facility will provide:

● A large covered outdoor waiting area.

● A large air-conditioned waiting area within the Visitor Processing facility.

● New toilets with better access.

● An automatic queuing system which eliminates the need for people to stand in long queues.

● Facilities to enable large groups of people to be processed.

● Access to more lockers for the storage of personal items.

● Computer enhanced processing facilities.

● Improved security screening including X-raying of bags and metal detection similar to that found at

airports.

It is envisaged that there will be minimal disruptions to current visiting arrangements during construction as all efforts are made for continued operations of the centre.

The new facility is expected to commence operating mid year.
