Howard’s broken promises on Tasmania’s forests

1st May 07

The Prime Minister should not expect Tasmanians to believe him on this visit to Tasmania, when he broke key promises to protect iconic Tasmanian forests in 2004, Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.

‘To children overboard and WMDs, add ‘forests will be saved’ to the list of Mr Howard’s pre-election lies,” Senator Brown said.

“In 2004, forced to follow Mark Latham’s lead in saving forests, Mr Howard committed himself to “immediate protection of 18,700 hectares of old-growth forests in the Styx and Florentine valleys…”. But post-election he welched and agreed with Labor Premier Lennon

to protect only “4730 hectares of old-growth eucalypt against a target of 18,700 hectares” - none of it in the Upper Florentine. Those forests are now being destroyed.

“Post-election, Howard turned the chainsaw on his own election promise as well as the ancient forests and their wildlife,” Senator Brown said.
