The Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and Reconciliation, Bob McMullan, today offered his respects on the passing of Charles Perkins, an Arrernte man from Alice Springs, and his condolences to the Perkins family.

"Mr Perkins was a great Australian whom I knew for a long time and considered a friend," Mr McMullan said.

"I met frequently with Mr Perkins throughout his career as a senior Public Servant, involvement in soccer, ongoing activism and sports administration.

"Mr Perkins was a man with a deep commitment to social justice who fought all his life to improve the lives of indigenous Australians.

"Mr Perkins was a fighter for his people, who was able to bring both recognition and action to injustices that affected indigenous Australians.

"Mr Perkins contributed significantly to the process of reconciliation and addressing indigenous injustice," Mr McMullan said.
