HUNT ANNOUNCES $20,000 TO CARE FOR CARERS IN ROSEBUD

Thursday, 10 March 2005

The Hon Greg Hunt MP, Federal Member for Flinders, has announced funding of $20,000 to assist carers in the Flinders electorate.

Mr Hunt said, “Southern Peninsula Community Care will receive $20,000 for their ‘Host Home Respite” project under the Australian Government’s National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP).

I commend Southern Peninsula Community Care for their hard work and for providing a high level of assistance and valuable support for carers.

The existing services run by Southern Peninsula Community Care provide four host home projects. This funding will expand the host home project to five host homes and provide services for carers of frail aged, particularly people with dementia and challenging behaviours.

The service offers respite for four participants per house and one trained volunteer, for a total of six hours of respite to four clients per week. The project targets carers in the local government area of the Mornington Peninsula.

NRCP services include a range of innovative and flexible community support services for carers of frail older people and carers of people with disabilities who wish to remain living in their own homes.

In response to the difficulties and challenges experienced by carers, the Australian Government has increased the level of assistance available to help them. This will help local people who care for disabled or elderly people to obtain respite.

The NRCP is a significant component of the Australian Government’s aged care policy.”
