MEDIA RELEASE

WATTLE TREES FOR ALL SCHOOLS TO COMMEMORATE BALI TRAGEDY 20 October, 2002 MIN 215/02

Today I announced that the Commonwealth Government will provide for all schools across Australia to receive a wattle tree seedling or seeds, to commemorate victims of the tragedy in Bali.

The announcement was made after a special National Day of Mourning Service at the Reverend Bill Crews’ Ashfield Parish Mission in Sydney.

A wattle tree planting ceremony will give school communities an opportunity to come together to remember, commemorate and express support for each other and for those Australians who have lost those they love.

These trees should grow in our schools along with understanding, tolerance and confidence in Australia’s future.

The wattle tree seedlings and seeds will be distributed through the offices of every Federal Member of Parliament across Australia.
