Funding has been announced for the Queanbeyan Multilingual Centre and the Canberra and Queanbeyan Migrant Resource Centre, Gary Nairn, the Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, said today.

“Core funding for settlement services of $26,360 has been allocated to the Queanbeyan Multilingual Centre and funding of $267,679 has been allocated for the Canberra and Queanbeyan Migrant Resource Centre. The funding represents the Federal Government’s contribution towards the expenses of the Centre for the period 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2003,” Gary Nairn said.

The core funding provided by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs for the Migrant Resource Centres/Migrant Service Agencies network is to achieve the following outcomes:

· Migrants in the target area will be able to settle and participate better in the social and economic life of the community;

· Communities of people from diverse cultural backgrounds in the target area will be supported and empowered to participate in the wider community; and

· Core-funded settlement services in the target area will be delivered in an effective, efficient and accountable manner.

“The Queanbeyan Multilingual Centre and the Canberra and Queanbeyan Migrant Resource Centre play an important part in assisting immigrants meet the daily challenges which they face when living in Australia and the funding they will receive will ensure they are able to continue this service,” Gary Nairn concluded.
