Our Last Chance to Nominate Senior Australian of the Year Says Baird

The Federal Member for Cook, Bruce Baird MP, today reminded Shire Residents to nominate a local for Senior Australian of the Year.

“Time is running out to nominate a senior Shire resident who has made a contribution to our community and our Nation” Mr Baird said.

“Nominations for the 2005 awards close on 20 August and people should get their nominations in now to ensure they are considered for this year’s award”.

“There are many older people in the Shire who through their work and contribution make a real difference to the community and nation that they live in”.

“This is our opportunity to recognise the work of someone we think is helping to make the Shire, and Australia, a better place to live”.

The current Senior Australian of the Year is Tahree Gordon, who founded the Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary in Victoria and spends much of her time caring for abused children and helping to build their self esteem through interaction with the animals at her sanctuary. She has also set up an animal care program in Barwon Heads Prison.

“We all know someone in our community who deserves to be recognised and we should nominate him or her for this prestigious award”.

The Australian Government is a partner of the Senior Australian of the Year and long standing supporter of the Australian of the Year Awards program.

Nomination forms are available at Commonwealth Bank branches or from Mr Baird’s office. Alternatively, they may be obtained online at or by phoning 1300 655 193
