Media Release The Hon Ian Macfarlane, MP

30 April 2007

SA INNOVATION TO CUT EMISSIONS FROM CONCRETE PRODUCTION Carbon emissions from concrete production will be reduced by 10 per cent thanks to creative software program, QestAuto, developed by an innovative Adelaide company.

Australian Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, Ian Macfarlane, today announced $708,191 through Commercial Ready to help Spectra Quality Engineering Software Tools commercialise the system.

"The company will use the grant to further develop its automated concrete quality-control system that speeds up a previously labour-intensive process," Mr Macfarlane said.

“The Australian Standard AS1379 requires concrete to meet certain strength levels 28 days after pouring. QestAuto automatically adjusts concrete mixes to optimise consistency.

"The system maximises the use of local conditions and supplementary materials, using less cement and cutting carbon emissions in the production phase. This should reduce production failures, saving time and money for the building industry."

Mr Macfarlane said there was already great interest in the cutting-edge Australian technology from the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Twenty-three companies are sharing in over $9.7 million through the latest round of Commercial Ready and Commercialising Emerging Technologies (COMET) funding.
