FORREST WELCOMES A FURTHER $30M FOR CALDER HIGHWAY

John Forrest, The Nationals Federal Member for Mallee has welcomed the Coalition’s announcement to invest up to a further $30 million to the cost of the Calder Highway intersection with the Calder Alternative Route at Ravenswood.

“The Coalition is building on its previous investment of $289 million in this vital highway, which is the major link between Mildura and Melbourne.

“The commitment of up to $30 million will eliminate the current dangerous, poorly aligned intersection,” Mr Forrest said.

He said the Coalition’s plan to secure local transport needs through its 2020 plan for Australia’s transport future recognises that all Australians should benefit from a growing economy and includes important road projects for Mallee community.

“We all have a right to safe and modern roads and I am determined to provide practical help to people living in Mallee. We have all had enough of the short-term patchwork approach by the Victorian Labor Government. This is why the Coalition’s plan includes new conditions to ensure that projects start and finish on time and within budget.

“Through careful management of our $1.1 trillion economy, and our commitment to disciplined budgets, the Coalition has ensured the funds are available for these important investments,” Mr Forrest said.

He said local roads will be significantly improved under a re-elected Coalition Government with a new $300 million programme for development roads and a big boost for existing programmes.

Mr Forrest said the Coalition’s 2020 Plan for local roads would bring huge benefits for Mallee people.

“The Coalition has an integrated vision for improving local roads and national highways and our local roads plan commits more funds for the roads in Mallee that mums and dads, small business people, farmers and truck drivers use every day.

“I will be looking for a strong mandate this coming election to ensure that Mallee receives its fair share of the $24 billion Auslink programme for rural road, rail and aviation,” Mr Forrest said.
