MEDIA RELEASE Senator the Hon. Robert Hill Minister for Defence Leader of the Government in the Senate

25 Oct 2002 MIN 605/02

Adelaide has surfaced as the major winner from a $4.76 million contract signed between the Department of Defence and BAE Systems Australia to provide local support for the Collins Class Submarine periscopes.

Defence Minister Robert Hill said the five-year contract would ensure the existing periscope maintenance capability continues within Australia, removing the threat of it returning to the United Kingdom.

The contract provides:

Jobs for experienced periscope maintainers to be located in both South Australia and Western Australia where the submarines are based; ●

Support for the periscope maintenance facility in Adelaide; and ● Ongoing technical advice from the original periscope manufacturers, Thales Optronics. ●

Senator Hill said the contract represented another important step towards self reliance within our Defence industries.

"The ability to support and maintain our submarines within Australia will further develop Australia’s skills and technology for the submarine sector," Senator Hill said.

He said the new contract was not only good for the Navy, but was also of great benefit to Defence industry and the Australian economy.
