Minister congratulates Young Australian of the Year for 2008 Casey Stoner

The Minister for Youth, the Hon Kate Ellis MP today congratulated world motorcycle champion Casey Stoner

on being named Young Australian of the Year for 2008.

"Casey is a tremendous ambassador for Australian sport and everything that young people can achieve with

talent, hard work and commitment to their goals," said Minister Ellis.

"The people of Casey's hometown of Tamworth, New South Wales can be justifiably proud of everything he

has accomplished since he won his first national title at just six years of age.

"Casey's rise through the ranks of elite motorcycling to win the Moto GP world championship in September

2007 promises to be first of many, high-profile successes on the international stage that I hope will inspire

other young Australians," said Minister Ellis.

The Minister also congratulated the other finalists in the Young Australian of the Year Award, which

recognises people aged 16 to 25 who are outstanding and exceptional young Australians.

"They are all very deserving finalists who continue to make a fantastic contribution to the community," said

Minister Ellis.

The Young Australian of the Year has been awarded since 1979.

Casey received his award at an Australia Day eve event in Canberra, where awards were also presented to the

Australian of the Year, the Senior Australian of the Year (60 years and over) and Australia's Local Hero.
