LABOR GIVES TWO THUMBS UP TO THE NEW ADF LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK AWARDS FOR AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS

Labor gives its unqualified support and congratulations to the Australian Defence Force for the introduction of their innovative Leadership and Teamwork Awards.

The awards promise to encourage a motivational relationship between our military and secondary schools around the country.

Over time this program should have a positive impact on the serious recruitment problems faced by the ADF.

I encourage participating schools in all states to get behind the awards. It would be terrific to see ADF Leadership and Teamwork Awards develop to the point where they have an entrenched and respected place in school speech nights by 2016.

Classrooms, playgrounds and school sports fields are the cradle of our nation’s leaders.

Acknowledging young leadership is perhaps too frequently overlooked. These awards provide the opportunity to encourage leadership and promote team work.

The fact that there will now be a tangible link between these young leaders and our proud military tradition will no doubt be an enormous source of pride for the award recipients.

This awards program is an excellent start, but Labor wants to encourage more and more interaction between education and skills centres and our armed forces.

We could be building better links between the ADF and training authorities and also the private sector to ensure more accreditation is available for specialist skills learnt by our servicemen and women as well as their expertise in leadership and personnel management.
