Million Dollar Leg-Up For Industry Innovation Access

Media Release

25 July 2002

The establishment of an Australian Industry Innovation Exchange by one of our peak industry bodies, the Australian Industry Group, will considerably enhance the nation’s innovation capabilities.

Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane today announced a Commonwealth funding offer of $1 million under the Government’s Innovation Access Program to help with the project.

"The Innovation Access Program is designed to promote innovation by improving Australian access to global, leading-edge research and technologies and encourage local businesses to participate," said Mr Macfarlane.

InnovationXchange will connect the major stakeholders - industry, government and research institutions - to provide access to the best and most applicable technologies. It will become an important mechanism for increasing competitiveness and achieving greater industry efficiencies.

"One of the elements of InnovationXchange will be the Access Service which links users and providers through direct and online business services. It will also offer membership to business and research institutions and therefore better access to innovation resources and services," said Mr Macfarlane.

Mr Macfarlane also announced a grant of $439,315 to the Monash University’s Gippsland School of Computing to establish a Technology Diffusion Gateway Network Project.

"The Network will provide specific and general expertise in business and technology analysis and implementation strategies. One of its key objectives will be to coordinate industry support groups to embrace new technologies that will improve productivity and create employment opportunities," said Mr Macfarlane.

"One of the significant benefits of this network is that it will offer solutions to sustainable industry development and job creation specifically targeting small to medium businesses, particularly in regional Australia. Many do not have access to or know how to access new and emerging technologies and projects. This project will remove that obstacle," he said.

The funding for the projects is part of the $3 billion innovation statement, Backing Australia’s Ability, which underscores the Government’s commitment to improving Australian business innovation.
