Guide to Preserving Our Heritage Australia's cultural collecting institutions now have a comprehensive users guide to assess the significance of their heritage objects and collections.

Significance-a guide to assessing the significance of cultural heritage objects and collections provides vital information about conserving, interpreting and managing objects and collections.

'Significance was developed to assist those who care for Australia's cultural heritage identity to preserve our collections now and into the future,' said the Federal Minister for the Arts, Mr Peter McGauran.

'Australia's heritage collections are an important national asset-there are an estimated 41 million objects held in Australian museums, art galleries and historical collections.

'It is vital that we conserve and document these collections which tell the story of our history, and the events that contribute to our sense of identity.'

By using this guide, cultural and historical organisations will have a sound basis on which to make collection management decisions relating to conservation, preservation and access.

'Significance is an essential publication for everyone working with collections-including registrars, curators, conservators, educators, exhibition and public program designers,' Mr McGauran said.

'It is equally relevant for museums of all sizes-from small volunteer-run historical societies to large State and national institutions.'

Significance was developed by the Heritage Collections Council-a partnership between the Federal, State and Territory Governments and the museum sector.

The publication was launched today at the Museums Australia Conference in Canberra.
