NCA DISMANTLES INTERSTATE HEROIN TRAFFICKING OPERATION

Minister for Justice and Customs, Senator Amanda Vanstone, announced that the National Crime Authority had dismantled an interstate heroin trafficking operation, seizing more than 16 kilograms of the drug.

“This is a significant success for the NCA in the fight against illicit drugs, not only because of the seizure of a large quantity of heroin, but because of the alleged interstate links,” Senator Vanstone said.

The NCAs long-term operation was conducted in co-operation with New South Wales Police Crime Agencies and culminated in the arrest today of four men in Sydney and one woman in Melbourne.

It is alleged that three of the men and one woman were in the process of effecting the sale of approximately 1.4 kilograms of heroin.

“The success of this operation highlights the broad scope of the law enforcement effort against illicit drugs and again demonstrates that with an appropriate focus and resources for such work, significant results are achievable,” Senator Vanstone said.

The people arrested are:

Duncan LAM, Sak Cheung born 21 June 1954

Ting Man NGAI, born 8 July 1973

Anthony Hau Khuan PHU, born 20 September 1962

Kim Loan NGUYEN, born 20 January 1975

Lawson CHUNG, born 26 January 1970

Following the arrests, a number of properties were searched and further items located including approximately 15 kilograms of heroin, more than $80,000 cash, approximately $250,000 in gold bullion, a firearm, a quantity of gold jewellery and prohibited weapons.

LAM, NGAI, PHU and NGUYEN have been charged with conspiracy to supply a large commercial quantity of heroin; NGAI and PHU have also been charged with supply of a large commercial quantity of heroin; CHUNG has also been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

NCA inquiries are continuing.
