OFFICE OF THE PRIME MINISTER

CANBERRA

STATEMENT BY MRS JANETTE HOWARD

In his article in today’s Australian, Glenn Milne asserted that Dr Peter Hollingworth’s choice as Governor-General was mine and not that of my husband. That claim is totally false.

The same article quotes an unnamed “senior cabinet member” as saying that both Dr Hollingworth and I are high Anglicans and also “in the same high Anglican faction”.

This assertion is also totally false. Although an Anglican myself, it would be simply inaccurate to describe me as a high Anglican and any suggestion of an association between myself and the Governor-General directly or indirectly within the Anglican church is completely erroneous.

Neither of these allegations was checked by Mr Glenn Milne with me, my husband or a member of my husband’s staff.

Both claims are wrong. In addition, the suggestion that I would use my family role to promote a particular view or candidate is deeply offensive to me. Mr Milne owes me an apology.
