Public deserves PBS reform now: Greens

Senator Nettle, 16th November 2006

Australian Greens spokesperson for Health, Senator Kerry Nettle said today that changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme announced by Health Minister Tony Abbott create an unnecessary delay in lowering the cost of medicines.

"Consumers deserve the PBS changes that will lower the cost of generic drugs now, not in years to come as these changes are gently phased in." Senator Nettle said.

"Full transparency and price disclosure mechanisms should be put in place immediately.

"The Government is right to put a stop to the comfortable arrangement between pharmaceutical companies and pharmacists that lead to inflated prices for consumers.

"Prices have been artificially inflated and the problem should be fixed immediately. Phasing in changes over several years means pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies are protected for years more to the determent of health consumers.
