Dr Carmen Lawrence, Shadow Minister for the Status of Women, today congratulated Australian athletes - especially Australian women - on their success at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

"The success of Australia's favourite athletes such as Cathy Freeman and Susie O'Neill, rising stars Leisel Jones and Lauren Burns and the great team effort from our hockey, basketball, softball, beach volleyball and rowing teams has shown the world how talented Australian women are.

"And it's not just the winners who have made us proud. The courage of Louise Currey, who overcame serious injury to participate in the javelin and the strength of Jane Saville, who accepted her disqualification from the 20km walk event with dignity, have made us all feel proud to be Australian.

"I hope that all Australians look on our women athletes with pride, who all too often are overlooked in the competition for sponsorship dollars.

"Following the Olympics, I hope all Australians will continue to support these individuals and teams who have made us so proud this past fortnight, and to remind business, advertisers and the media that Australians will watch women's sports, as long they are given enough media coverage.

"I am also pleased about the success of Australian women because it provides young Australian women and girls with a new set of positive role models, who are active and successful, with fit healthy bodies that are not Hollywood thin.

"I hope the success of women in these Games will encourage more young women to take part in sport in their communities.

"Cathy Freeman has been a role model for young Aboriginal people for some years now, and I hope all young Australians will begin to emulate the good grace of Jane Saville, the dedication of Michelle Timms and the team spirit of the Hockeyroos", Dr Lawrence concluded.
