AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCE ACADEMY MIDSHIPMAN DIES OF MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE

A 19-year-old Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) Midshipman has tragically passed away in the early hours of this morning due to Meningococcal Disease.

The Next of Kin have been informed.

The Midshipman concerned reported ill to the Canberra Area Medical Unit -Duntroon yesterday morning.

Those ADFA staff, Midshipmen and Officer Cadets who have had close contact with the Midshipman have been identified and have been treated with preventive antibiotics.

This tragedy occurred on ADFA's Open Day. Air Commodore (Dr) Tony Austin, Director General Defence Health Service, stressed that there is no risk to the public who attended the Open Day.

"We are working closely with ACT Public Health officials on this matter and would have immediately shut down the Open Day if we had believed there was even the slightest risk to the public," said Air Commodore Austin.
