Hon Arch Bevis MP

Federal Member for Brisbane

Shadow Minister for Homeland Security, Aviation and Transport Security

INSTEAD OF SCREENING IR ADS, SCREEN MORE CONTAINERS AND AIRCRAFT BAGGAGE

Instead of spending $100 million on an advertising campaign to sugar-coat his extreme industrial relations changes, John Howard should be plugging the holes in our counter-terrorism response.

Shadow Minister for Homeland Security Arch Bevis said the $100 million could be better spent:

● Ensuring more shipping containers are x-rayed. Currently ninety per cent of containers entering Australia are not x-rayed.

● Ensuring all baggage at international airports is x-rayed.

● Assisting regional airports to improve their security operations. The money spent on ads is about three times that allocated to security at regional airports.

● Providing explosive detection sniffer dogs and more closed circuit television for our rail system.

Mr Bevis added: “John Howard has lots of thought bubbles on security but has implemented very few practical measures.

“But he’ll happily throw $100 million at an advertising campaign to push his extreme ideological agenda on industrial relations.”
